Introduction
Use this article when preparing an iXBRL filing and you need to tag specific pieces of text within the notes. Inline tags are commonly used for organization information and other narrative disclosures that must be individually identified within the report.
Summary
After following these steps, the selected text is linked to the appropriate inline tag. This allows the iXBRL engine to identify and classify specific information, such as the reporting entity name, legal form, or other required disclosures.
Steps
- Make sure Tagging Mode is enabled.
- Navigate to the text you want to tag.
Select the text that should receive the inline tag.
For example, the name of the reporting entity.
- Open the Insert tab in the toolbar.
- Click XBRL.
Select XBRL Inline Tag.
- Browse the available inline tags or use the search field to find a specific tag.
Select the tag that best matches the selected text.
For example, when tagging the company name, select the tag that represents the reporting entity name.
- Save the changes.
The selected text is now tagged and highlighted within the document.
Review an inline tag
- Click the tagged text.
- Review the properties displayed in the Properties panel.
- Confirm that the selected tag matches the content being tagged.
Remove an inline tag
- Click the tagged text.
- Select the element in the element path at the bottom of the screen. The element will become yellow after selecting.
- Open the menu.
- Click Remove. The selected text is no longer tagged.
Expected Result
The selected text is linked to an inline tag from the taxonomy.
The tag is visible within the document and can be reviewed, modified, or removed through the Properties panel.
Remarks
- Inline tags should be applied only to the specific text that represents the tagged disclosure.
- Use the tag that best reflects the meaning of the selected text, not just the wording.
- The available inline tags depend on the selected taxonomy.
- Common examples include:
- Name of the reporting entity
- Legal form of the entity
- Registered office
- Country of incorporation
- Other entity-specific disclosures required by the taxonomy
- After applying an inline tag, the tagged text remains editable and the assigned tag can be changed later if required.
