Understanding the XBRL validation report

Introduction

Use this article when your generated iXBRL package contains warnings, errors, inconsistencies, or other validation findings. Understanding the validation report helps you identify the cause of issues and locate the affected concepts in your report.

Summary

After reading this article, you will understand the different sections of the validation report and how to efficiently locate and resolve validation findings in your document.

Overview

The validation report consists of two main sections:

Conversion report

The conversion report contains findings detected during the conversion of your report into an iXBRL package.

These messages are generated before the taxonomy validation takes place and typically relate to the configuration of the report itself.

Examples include:

  • Missing properties
  • Incorrectly configured containers
  • Incorrectly placed tags
  • Missing required iXBRL settings

Validation report

The validation report contains findings generated by the selected taxonomy during the validation process.

Depending on the severity, these findings may be reported as:

  • Warnings
  • Errors
  • Inconsistencies

These messages relate to the tagged content and taxonomy requirements of the filing.

Examples include:

  • Calculation inconsistencies
  • Missing mandatory tags
  • Invalid dimensional relationships
  • Incorrect fact values
  • Taxonomy-specific validation rules

A detailed overview of common validation messages and their solutions can be found here in the Troubleshooting section.

Locate validation findings in your report

When investigating a validation message, it is recommended to use the validation report together with the inline viewer.

  1. Open the validation report.
  2. Open the inline viewer in a separate window or tab.
  3. Locate the affected concept in the validation message.
  4. Copy the concept name from the validation report.

When copying the concept name, remove the taxonomy prefix if present. For example:

    • IFRS_PropertyPlantAndEquipmentPropertyPlantAndEquipment
  5. Paste the concept name into the search field of the inline viewer.
  6. Open the matching result.

You can now navigate directly to the affected concept within the generated iXBRL output.

Investigate the issue

After locating the concept, review the relevant tagging and configuration.

Check:

  • Whether the correct container has been assigned.
  • Whether the value itself is correct.
  • Whether the accuracy is correct.
  • Whether the balance type is correct.
  • Whether dimensions, members, or other properties have been configured correctly.
  • Whether the calculation is consistent.

In many cases, the validation message combined with the concept details provides enough information to identify the cause of the issue.

Expected Result

You can identify the affected concept, understand the validation finding, and determine what needs to be corrected in the report before generating a new iXBRL package.

Remarks

  • Not every validation finding requires changes. Some warnings may be acceptable depending on the circumstances and should be reviewed with your auditor.
  • Always regenerate the iXBRL package after making corrections and review the updated validation report.
  • If you are unable to determine the cause of a validation finding, contact your Tangelo consultant for assistance.
