Use this article to choose the correct image formats and quality settings for use in Tangelo. Selecting the appropriate format helps maintain visual quality across PDF, website, and iXBRL outputs while avoiding unnecessary file size increases or image quality loss.
Each uploaded image can contain multiple renditions for different output channels. In most cases, only the base image needs to be uploaded, while other renditions are generated automatically or can optionally be replaced with dedicated versions for specific outputs.
Summary
After following these recommendations, images will display with the best possible quality across Tangelo outputs while remaining optimized for PDF, website, and iXBRL generation.
Recommended Formats
| Usage | Recommended Format | Remarks |
|---|---|---|
| Photos | JPG | Optimized for photographs and smaller file sizes. PNG or PDF can also be used but may increase file size. |
| Graphs, logos, infographics, full-page designs | Recommended for preserving sharp lines, text, and vector graphics. Used as-is in PDF outputs without resizing. | |
| Transparent graphics or UI-style assets | PNG | Suitable for transparency support, but text and vectors are rasterized. |
| Vector graphics | SVG | Can be used for scalable graphics, but font handling and transparency may cause issues if not prepared correctly. |
Important
- PDF is the preferred format for designed pages, logos, infographics, and print-oriented visuals.
- JPG is typically recommended for photographic material.
- PNG and JPG files are pixel-based formats and may lose sharpness when scaled.
- PDF-based images generally provide the best output quality in generated PDFs.
- If different image resolutions are required for download PDFs and print PDFs, separate renditions can be uploaded.
Uploading Image Versions
Base Image
The Base image is always required.
- The base image is shown in the editor.
- The base image is used as the default rendition for outputs without a dedicated version.
- Uploading or replacing the base image automatically regenerates the iXBRL rendition.
Optional Renditions
Additional renditions can optionally be uploaded for specific output channels:
- PDF - download quality
- PDF - print quality
- Website - desktop
- Website - mobile
If no dedicated rendition is uploaded, Tangelo automatically generates the required output versions from the base image.
Image Quality Recommendations
| Rendition | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Base (default) | PDF preferred, or JPG/PNG at approximately 72 PPI |
| PDF - print quality | Vector-based PDF preferred, minimum 300 PPI for raster images |
| Website renditions | Optimized for screen usage and file size |
| Full-page background images | Use A4 size + 3 mm bleed for print outputs, without crop marks |
Remarks
- Tangelo automatically generates output renditions where possible.
- Generated renditions may not always provide the same quality as manually optimized versions.
- PDF page inserts and designed backgrounds generally provide the best print results.
- Replacing the base image also replaces regenerated output renditions such as iXBRL.
- Large PNG files may negatively impact output performance and file size.
- SVG files should use converted text paths to avoid font rendering issues.
