Use references to create links within a document or to external resources. Tangelo includes a built-in reference system that helps maintain links automatically, even when content is moved or updated.
References can be added through the Insert menu in the editor. Depending on the document configuration, different reference types may be available, including:
- Hyperlink
- Section reference
- File reference
- Data source field
- Glossary term
This article focuses on the two most commonly used reference types: section references and hyperlinks.
Summary
After completing these steps, you can create links to other sections in the document or to external websites and resources.
Create a Section Reference
Section references create dynamic links to other sections within the same document.
Unlike manually typed references, section references automatically remain valid when sections are renamed, moved, or when page numbers change.
Steps
- Select the text that should become the reference.
- Open the Insert menu.
- Click References.
- Select Section.
- In the document structure window, select the section you want to link to.
- Click Apply.
Expected Result
The selected text becomes a section reference and is displayed as a link in the editor.
Configure Section Reference Properties
After creating a section reference, additional display options can be configured.
Steps
- Click the section reference in the editor.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Properties panel.
- Configure the available settings.
Common properties include:
Show
Determines what is displayed as the reference.
Depending on the document configuration, options may include:
- Referenced section title
- Selected text
- Numbering
- Other configured reference formats
Show Between Parentheses
Adds page number information to the reference.
This can be used to automatically display information such as:
- Page number
- Page range
- First and last page of a section
The page numbers are updated automatically whenever the document layout changes.
Expected Result
The reference displays the selected information and automatically updates when the document structure changes.
Create a Hyperlink
Hyperlinks can be used to link to external websites, online resources, or other URLs.
Steps
- Select the text that should become a hyperlink.
- Open the Insert menu.
- Click References.
- Select Hyperlink.
- Enter the destination URL.
- Click Apply.
Expected Result
The selected text becomes a clickable hyperlink in supported output formats.
Remarks
- Section references are preferred over manually typing chapter names or page numbers.
- Section references automatically update when sections are renamed, moved, or when page numbers change.
- Only section titles can be referenced. Headings inside the text cannot be used as section references.
- Page number references are calculated during PDF generation.
- To validate page number references and navigation links, generate a PDF of the complete document.
- Available reference types may differ depending on the document type and customer configuration.
- Additional reference types such as file references, glossary terms, or data source fields may be available in your environment.
