Use a data source field in text

Introduction

Use this article when you want to insert an individual value from a data source directly into your document text.

A Data Source Field works similarly to a synchronised table, but instead of linking an entire table or range, it links a single cell from the data source. This is useful for values that need to appear within running text, such as a revenue figure, number of employees, percentage, or other KPI.

Summary

After following these steps, a value from a single cell in your data source is inserted into the text. The value remains linked to the data source and cannot be manually changed in the Tangelo Editor.

Steps

1. Open the document and navigate to the text where you want to insert the value.
2. Place your cursor at the position where the value should appear.
3. Open the Insert tab.
4. Select Data Source Field.
5. Select the data source containing the value you want to use.
6. Select the relevant sheet or range.
7. Select the cell containing the value.
8. Confirm your selection.

The value from the selected cell is now inserted into the text as a linked data source field.

For example, a sentence could contain a linked value like:

Revenue increased to €1,250 million during the reporting period.

The numerical value can come directly from Excel while the surrounding text remains editable in Tangelo.

Working with linked values

A Data Source Field remains connected to its source cell. The value displayed in Tangelo is therefore determined by the value in the data source.

You cannot manually change the linked value in the Editor. If the value needs to be changed, update it in the source file and upload and synchronise the updated data source.

This ensures that the source data remains leading and prevents a value in the narrative from being changed independently from the underlying data.

Expected Result

The value of a single cell from the data source is displayed directly within your document text and remains linked to its source.

When new data is synchronised, the linked value can be updated together with the other content connected to that data source.

Remarks

• Use a Data Source Field for individual values in text; use a synchronised table when you want to insert a complete table or range.
• The linked value cannot be edited directly in the Tangelo Editor.
• Changes should always be made in the source data and subsequently synchronised with the document.
• Data Source Fields are particularly useful for recurring reports where figures in narrative text need to remain consistent with the underlying Excel data.
